World University Presidents Forum: Discuss the Changes of the Times and the Mission of Universities

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education of China, co-hosted by the China Association of Higher Education, Peking University, and Tsinghua University, and supported by the People’s Government of Huairou District, Beijing, the World University Presidents Forum was held in Beijing, China.

Ding Zhongli, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC, Chairman of the China Democratic League Central Committee, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that China is willing to exchange and share development experience with universities around the world, deepen practical cooperation under the consensus of the global development initiative and the global civilization initiative, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for humankind.

Chen Jie, Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Education and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to education and will play a leading role of higher education to advance high-standard education opening up.

Liu Yuhui, Deputy Mayor of the Beijing Municipal People’s Government, welcomed world-renowned universities to come to China to engage in cooperative education, enhance collaborative scientific research, promote cultural exchanges between universities, and deepen practical cooperation.

Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, hopes to use this forum as an opportunity to promote inclusive, equitable and high-quality development of education.

At the conference, Du Yubo, President of China Association of Higher Education, delivered a keynote speech on “Adapt to the Era of Transformation and Share the Mission of Universities”. More than 60 presidents of prestigious universities gave presentations on the theme of “Changes of the Times and the Mission of Universities,” including University College London, New York University, The Australian National University, Peking University, National University of Singapore, Heidelberg University, Tsinghua University, University of Ottawa, and Osaka University.

The conference was attended by more than 500 guests from 36 countries and regions, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
