Hair extensions – All You Need to Know
Hair plays a very important part in our outer appearance. Every woman desires luscious shiny hair that goes on for days. Although hair trends keep changing, the desire for long thick hair is something that is always in demand. But if for whatever reason, you no longer have such hair whether genetically or due to overexposure to treatments, there are plenty of ways to restore length and volume to hair. The most common and cost-effective way is with human hair extensions.
What are hair extensions made of?
Hair extensions are usually made of either real human hair or synthetic hair strands, but for the purpose of this blog, we’ll only look at human hair. Human hair extensions are made from real human hair that is obtained from donors. This hair has the cuticle intact and healthy which makes it look very natural (since it is natural) and easy to brush and style.
Synthetic extensions, on the other hand, are made from fibers and different compounds and do not contain natural hair. Instead, they are made to imitate real human hair. There are different qualities of synthetic extensions, but even the top quality extensions have a certain wiry, plastic feel that makes it hard for them to blend with real hair. Synthetic extensions are more economical, but they cannot be dyed or heat-treated.
Human hair extensions, meanwhile, can be treated just like your real hair. You can dye it, heat style it and they will look and feel more natural as well as blend very easily with your natural hair. Although human extensions are a bit costly, the majority of people choose human hair extensions for the quality.
There are many different types of hair extensions which include but are not limited to:
- Clip-in hair extensions: These are ready-to-use extensions that can be installed by the wearer in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is clip in the extensions on your hair and you’re ready to go. These are meant for daily wear and are to be taken off at the end of the day. They are particularly ideal for special occasions.
- Tape-in extensions: These are more permanent than clip-on extensions and can be worn for an extended period of time. They are applied to your hair using the tape that comes with the extensions and usually require a professional to install and remove them at the salon. However, they can be installed by the wearer, but it can take 30 mins to over an hour depending on the level of the installer.
- Microlink hair extensions: These extensions, which are also known as i-tip hair extensions, come with beads at the end which are used to secure the wefts to sections of your natural hair. You can wash and brush them just like your natural hair. However, they also need repositioning every few weeks due to natural hair growth. They cannot be installed or removed by the wearer and require a professional.
You can use any of the above mentioned hair extensions if you want to experiment with your hair and looks. You can make your decision based on your budget, desired hair texture, colors and style.
