Bhai Dooj is a traditional festival that has epic legends attached to it. One story is of Krishna and his sister, Subhadra; after killing the demon Narkasura, he visited her sister. Subhadra welcomed her brother with a Puja Thali and applied Tilak on his forehead. She also brought sweets and flowers to make it extra special. Another story is associated with Yama and his sister, Yamuna, whom he met on the second day after the full moon or Dwitheya. Since then, the day is also known as the “Yamadwitheya” or “Yamadvitiya” in southern India. The auspicious Bhai Dooj festival falls on the last day of the five-day long Diwali or Tihar festivals. Apart from India, countries like Nepal also celebrate the Bhai Dooj festival, which falls on the second lunar day of the bright fortnight or Shukla Paksha in Kartik month.
The main difference between the Bhai Dooj festival and Raksha Bandhan is the month they come in. Bhai Dooj comes in the month of Kartik, i.e., October or November, whereas Raksha Bandhan falls in the Shravan month, i.e., August. The second significant difference between these two festivals is that in Rakhi, the brother vows to protect his sister when she ties the knot of Rakhi on his wrist. In Bhai Dooj, the sister applies the Tilak on her brother’s forehead and swears to protect him from all the evil. Raksha Bandhan can be celebrated by sisters duo, brothers duo, daughter-father duo, or non-biological sisters and brothers, but Bhai dooj is exclusive to biological sisters and brothers.
